09/28 - The Brighter Side of Jetlag

One of the nice things about jet lag is that it is no harder to get up at dawn to catch an early flight than to get up later. Our bodies didn't have a clue, so we woke up early enough to watch the sun rise.

09/26 - Bondi to Coogee

The last time we walked from Bondi Beach to Coogee it was raining. In fact, there were record breaking rains back in 2025, and we gave up a touch shy of Coogee with our clothes soaked through despite our rain gear.

This time, the weather was beautiful. The sun was out. People were about. It was a very different walk. Even better, a lot of the construction work has been completed since then. It's our welcome to Australia walk, and this time we really felt the welcome.

09/25 - Sydney at Night and the Aquarium

Sydney looks beautiful at night. The nights are long in the winter.

The next day we went to the aquarium.

09/24 - Chinese Friendship Garden

The area around the aquarium is bustling with all sorts of attractions. The calmest place around is the Chinese Friendship Garden which is a little piece of fantasy China right in Sydney.

On our way to the Chinese Friendship Garden

Greeting at the gate

It's another world.

It's easy to ignore the tall buildings around the garden.

A Chinese garden has to have bamboo.

And it has to have carp.

09/22 - Waterfall Beach to Lights Beach - 1

We had taken this walk before, but the coast is beautiful between Waterfall Beach and Lights Beach. There are coastal views, hills, rocks, kangaroos, wattles, thickets and distant mountains. What more could we ask for?

09/20 - Tingle Tree Skywalk

We took the Tingle Tree Skywalk again and hard marvelous views of the canopy. The skywalk swayed as we made our way along the walkways. We were terrified, but we were calmed by a team of workers going over the side to do repair work. After the skywalk, we wander the trail of giants and were suitably impressed from the ground.

09/17 - Elephant Rocks

They were redoing the walking trails at Elephant Rocks, so we didn't get down to the rocks proper. We had some nice views on the detour trail, so we were not disappointed.

The next day we came back to Elephant Rocks and took a longer walk all the way to Waterfall Beach. It was a beautiful coastal hike, and we were rewarded with a good sighting of a red kangaroo.

09/14 - Winter's Hollow in Denmark

We have been repeatedly warned against driving in rural Australia after dark on account of the high risk of hitting a kangaroo or other marsupial. We've taken this to heart, but in the winter it limits our dinner dining options. As it turns out, the restaurant Winter's Hollow, formerly Flame Trees, starts serving dinner at 4PM which meant we could get home well before sunset. We had been living on Massimo's wonderful pizza, but were in the mood for a proper sit down dinner, so we gave it a try.

It's right in town in a little courtyard, and it's a beautiful place inside. We had the Ruby's Roo Ragu, kangaroo braised in red wine with mashed potatoes. It was a favorite on the review sites and worth all the praise. We also had the excellent fresh sardines with fettucini and the wonderful flatfish pie with potatoes and onions and a cheese covered crust. There was a great wine list as one might expect in a wine producing region.

We had a wonderful meal and even made it back to our cottage well before dark.

09/13 - Exploring Ocean Beach Road

On our last day down in Denmark we were a bit less adventurous, so we south along down Ocean Beach Road. We followed the inlet to the bay which is a migration staging area for black swans, but we were too early or too late. It was a pleasant and interesting place to explore even without them.

09/12 - Light's Beach

We continued along the coast and explored Light's Beach a bit. It's another great beach with big rocks and big rollers.

09/10 - Cape Naturaliste - 1

We hiked at Cape Naturaliste following the trail around the lighthouse. We made it to the whale overlook and spent some time staring out to sea. There didn't seem to be any whales, but a woman also looking out to sea pointed some out to us. They're kind of tricky to spot, but once we got the hang of it, we saw a sea full of whales.

We also so an herbicide cart being used to get rid of those lovely but invasive arum lilies.

That's a whale or at least part of one.

That's a bit of another whale.

09/05 - Lake Cave

We went back to Lake Cave. It's an impressive climb down and an exhausting climb back up, but the cave is beautiful. The lake is completely calm and the limestone formations spectacular.

09/04 - Quinninup Falls - 1

The Qunninup Falls hike was a high point of our trip. We started at Moses Rock and headed north under sunny skies. It's a great coastal trail and very well maintained. It passes through a highland bog on a well constructed boardwalk and then descends sandy dunes to the beach where the Quinninup River joins the sea.

On our way out we had noticed a snake lying on the trail. We stepped around it cautiously. On the way back, the snake was gone. This was no surprise. Then, it started to rain. There was a light rain for most of our walk back to Moses Rock. We looked it up later. This type of snake is noted for lying out in the sun to warm up starting about a half hour before rain starts.

The trail signs say the trail is class 3 which is usually a reach for us, but we found it easy going, maybe class 2. Perhaps, the sand dune descent and ascent near the river are tougher on hot summer days.

09/01 - King's Garden in Perth

Our hotel in Perth is next door to a church. There seemed to be a bit going on there. First, there was some kind of service with a religious procession. Then came a group of dancers performing on the steps. We have no idea if they were related.

We spent much of the day at the King's Botanical Garden which offers views of the city, a war memorial and a botanical garden focused on plant life from Western Australia. It even has a skywalk and a duck pond. It's our kind of place.
