KAYAKING AND CANOEING If you own a kayak or a canoe, be
sure to bring it to the Cottage. You can paddle away from your own dock
and explore the lake. Moonlight kayaking is supposed to be especially
lovely on the lake; although we confess that we have never done it.
There is excellent sea kayaking in the area, and this is a great
way to get close to the wildlife such as the seals and the
guillemots.
If you have no kayak of your own, or if you are not an experienced kayaker, we highly recommend Adventures Through Kayaking (ask for Tammi) for guided tours and lessons, This is a wonderful activity for adults and children alike, but remember to pay attention to safety. Wear your lifejackets and wetsuits; don't go out alone unless you really know what you are doing, and, if you go out at night, carry adequate lighting and take a guide unless you are familiar with the area. |
HIKING Olympic National
Park is a hiker's paradise with trails for every season and every
fitness level. The Park encompasses three distinct ecosystems:
mountain/glacier, rainforest/river, and Pacific coast. There is
everything - wildlife, snowy peaks, wild, icy blue rivers, deserted
beaches with seastacks and mysterious petroglyphs, huge, ancient trees
veiled in moss. Waterfalls are everywhere.

SEASONAL
ACTIVITIES
White Water Rafting During the early and midsummer there are float trips and white water rafting trips on both the Hoh and the Elwha Rivers. Contact Olympic Raft and Guide Service for details. Snowshoeing and Skiing In the winter, usually around Christmas, the Hurricane Ridge Ski resort opens and you can drive up to the snows from the Cottage. The road is usually open on weekends and during the week around Christmas. There are ski and snowshoe rentals at the visitor center. |
FISHING
Lake Crescent is home to a unique species, the Beardslee Trout, a beautiful and spirited creature that puts up a thrilling fight when hooked. However, this lovely fish is catch and release only, and the Park Rangers take their responsibilities to protect the species very seriously. There is good steelhead fishing in season along the Sol Duc, the Bogachiel, the Elwha, and the Hoh, but rules for catch and release of wild fish change frequently, so get your license and check out the rules. Salmon and Halibut fishing charters leave from Sekiu and Clallam Bay, about an hour and a half from Lake Crescent. You can buy licenses at Swain's General Store in Port Angeles, and they can advise you about outfitters and guides. Even if you don't fish, you should take a trip out to the Sol Duc near the Hotsprings, to watch the salmon leap in August. |
MOUNTAIN BIKING The Olympic Discovery Trail runs from Port Townsend past Port Angeles. The Spruce Railroad Trail, accommodates mountain bikers as well as hikers and is much loved by both. Bring your bike and you can set off right from the Cottage door. BICYCLING There are also opportunities for conventional bicycling in the area. The Olympic Discovery Trail, which includes the Spruce Railroad Trail, is under construction, but more and more segments are open for walkers and cyclists. One nice stretch that runs along the strait is the Morse Creek Trail. It is east of Port Angeles at Morse Creek and runs all the way in to town. |
SURFING AND DIVING If you surf, there are wild Pacific beaches about an hour from the Cottage. If you dive, one of the best diving spots in the Northwest, in the Strait of San Juan de Fuca, is only a short drive from the Cottage. BEACHCOMBING The beaches of the North Olympic Peninsula are wild and wondrous, with mysterious tide pools and sea stacks to explore. There are a number of beaches to explore within an hour or two of the Cottage. NORTH OLYMPIC BEACHES |
