Recipe for Gingerbread Dough

Holiday - This is a holiday favorite

This is the dough we use for gingerbread cookies on our cookie tree each Christmas. It makes a whole herd of dough, so it makes lots of cookies. This dough is good for houses as well as cookies.

Gingerbread Dough

Gingerbread Dough (from Family Circle 12/11/84)

5 cups unsifted flour
1/2 tsp salt
3 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup molasses
1 egg
3 tsp baking powder
1/3 cup water

Sift flour, salt, spices and baking powder.
Beat shortening with sugar until fluffy.
Beat in molasses and egg.
Stir in flour to make stiff dough adding water as needed.
Chill 1 hour at least.

Roll out and cut out gingerbread men, stars, ...

Bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes.
