We are seeing a lot of potatoes on the menu lately in a variety of colors. Blue and purple are very popular and are now spudding to a supermarket near you. The first time we tried purple potatoes they tasted a bit much of iodine, but more recent versions have a rich mealy taste. It is high time this Incan staple made it onto our menus along with its cult cousin, quinoa (keen-wah). Potato pancakes, of course, are a big Jewish thing around Hanukah and during this feast of lights (we'll celebrate anything) we often contemplate why Jews celebrate a major victory over the ancient Greeks by eating an Incan foodstuff. If you have a clue, send us a note.
