As Time Goes By

Every fan of the movie Casablanca is familiar with the tune "As Time Goes By". We were reading Lisa Randall's book on modern physics and cosmology, Warped Passages, and she remarked on this song. She started wondering when she heard the familiar lyrics "The fundamental things apply as time goes by", which sure sounds like something from a relativity textbook.

She did a little research and discovered that the song, written in 1931 by Herman Hupfield, begins:

This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.

Einstein's influence is obvious. What a strange connection?
